In 2018, the H2020 European Commission launched an inducement award for the design of an affordable tactile graphic display. With a prize of 3 million euros, unsurprisingly it caught the attention of a few designers – myself included.

Over the year I developed an almost functional concept prototype, which was portable, affordable and handheld. It was however overambitious, and due to the prize asking for a minimum of three lines of Braille, as well as graphics – I was pushing the mechanical limits of my idea.

Now in 2019, I hoping to strip back the concept to its simplest mechanical form and re-test the idea. With a target cost of $50.00, this display could be hugely disruptive to the industry and finally give blind communities in less developed areas access to digital content.
